Harrow School

Once registered, Harrow will request a reference for all children from their current school. This can take the form of the end of Year 5 (age 9-10) school report.

In the Autumn term, at the beginning of Year 7 (age 10-11), all applicants will sit a Pre-selection assessment, a pre-test. This consists of:

1. A computerised intelligence test which takes an hour and consists of a series of different questions involving words, numbers and shapes, for example. Some parts of the test are timed. There are no past papers for this section.

2. A short composition (to assess spelling, grammar and vocabulary). This will be based on a general title and should be straightforward to answer. Boys are expected to produce a few paragraphs of accurate writing, communicating clear content. The section should take about 20minutes.

3. There are then two interviews, one with the House Master and then another with a senior Harrow teacher. Boys will be asked about their interest and there will also be more general questions to encourage discussion.

If successful with the 11+ pre-tests, the applicant will be offered a conditional place dependant on an average of 60% in the 13+ Common Entrance Exams.

Why are there so many apostrophes and what’s all this accent business? Singing and dancing in French is fun but suddenly needing to write can be a shock to the system. As vocab steps up and verbs creep in, Prep School Tutor will ensure that, in the run up to 13 plus Common Entrance exams, learning is manageable and conjugations are no longer daunting, but rather just another piece of a growing jigsaw of language to play with. Prep School Tutor soon guides tutees to build impressive sentence structures, going beyond the realms of survival language towards a far more flexible and far reaching form of communication.

Lost? Don’t be! If you have missed out and feel behind your peers, we have a Fast Track programme to suit you. A great many children start French in Year 7 with no previous knowledge but still manage to shine by the time the 13 plus Common Entrance comes along. Also, for those who have studied French but perhaps not been overly engaged, this is the moment to make absolutely sure that the foundation is in place and the groundwork is complete.

Latin, Greek, both even? Fostering an interest in the Greeks and Romans is one thing but navigating through the 13 plus syllabus of grammar, syntax and vocabulary can be a headache without some support and guidance. There are three possible levels for Classics at Common Entrance, as well as a more specialised scholarship level. Children who have studied for longer and feel more confident are stretched whilst those with less depth of learning are assessed separately. Our tutors ensure that children reach their level of potential. If there are gaps in knowledge for whatever reason, our specialists can fast track children who wish to take the higher tier papers. Tutors are also experienced in preparing children for Scholarship exams and school specific Classics awards.

History fascinates us on a personal level as well as a global level; there is just SO much to learn about though! Our tutors inspire a desire to learn more by making sessions fun as well as instructive and purposeful. They encourage curiosity in their students to question what went on in the past and how different events have influenced the present day. Children are helped along the way with learning tricky facts - dates, battles, pros and cons - but also, and importantly, shown how to analyse source material and to draw their own historical interpretations. Children are guided in how to read the question and answer the question asked, rather than trying to dodge the bullet with their own memorised anecdotes. The 13 plus Common Entrance syllabus for History can seem among the weightiest to manage; fear not, our tutors can clear the way to effective, confident learning.

There is a growing trend to include verbal reasoning as part of almost every assessment. Schools use the results as a guide to potential so it is worth having a handle on what to expect on the day. Don't believe anyone who says that it is not possible to prepare!

11+: Verbal Reasoning (VR) for pre-tests and 11 plus is comprised of up to fifty different question types including, for example, letter and number codes, identifying word endings and beginnings, odd one out exercises, analogies and number sequences. The more practice, the better as some papers can be long and time management is as much a concern as ability.

13+: Verbal Reasoning is not usually a requirement for 13+, however, for candidates coming from schools that do not prepare for Common Entrance, they may sit the school’s own papers. One of these may well be verbal reasoning.

Non-verbal reasoning looks easy at the start; the examples are usually straight forward enough. Scratch beneath the surface though and these assessments can prove pretty tough. Schools look at the scores as an indicator of academic potential so it is worth practising before the assessment day. Don't believe anyone who says that it is not possible to prepare!

11+: Non-verbal reasoning (NVR) both for pre-tests and 11 plus is a more visual assessment with questions based around shapes, patterns, symmetry and sequences. Some children find this light relief after the challenges of more wordy papers but others find these papers less clear. Either way, practice with the types of question remains key to success. Prep School Tutor can provide practice materials and help children understand where patterns lie.

13+: As for verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning (NVR) is not used for 13+ Common Entrance but can be a component for candidates sitting a school’s own equivalent papers for 13+ entry. Tasks are on visual assessment with questions based around shapes, patterns, symmetry and sequences. Some children breeze through but others find these papers less than obvious. Practice can make all the difference.
