Westminster School

For 13+ entry, be aware that the process starts in Year 6 (age 10-11). The candidate will need to take the ISEB Common pre-tests (computer-based tests in English, Mathematics and Reasoning). Westminster School then requests a reference from the candidate's current school.

Those reaching the required standard with the pre-tests and who have an acceptable school report will be invited for interview in the Spring term of Year 6. During the day, there will be short tests in Maths and English. Successful boys will be offered a place on condition that they average 70% at 13+ Common Entrance (taken in June of Year 8) or in the 13+ Westminster Scholarship, known as 'The Challenge' (taken in May of Year 8). For both exams, boys must sit: Maths, English, French, Science, Latin, History, Geography and, for CE only, RS.

Why are there so many apostrophes and what’s all this accent business? Singing and dancing in French is fun but suddenly needing to write can be a shock to the system. As vocab steps up and verbs creep in, Prep School Tutor will ensure that, in the run up to 13 plus Common Entrance exams, learning is manageable and conjugations are no longer daunting, but rather just another piece of a growing jigsaw of language to play with. Prep School Tutor soon guides tutees to build impressive sentence structures, going beyond the realms of survival language towards a far more flexible and far reaching form of communication.

Lost? Don’t be! If you have missed out and feel behind your peers, we have a Fast Track programme to suit you. A great many children start French in Year 7 with no previous knowledge but still manage to shine by the time the 13 plus Common Entrance comes along. Also, for those who have studied French but perhaps not been overly engaged, this is the moment to make absolutely sure that the foundation is in place and the groundwork is complete.

Latin, Greek, both even? Fostering an interest in the Greeks and Romans is one thing but navigating through the 13 plus syllabus of grammar, syntax and vocabulary can be a headache without some support and guidance. There are three possible levels for Classics at Common Entrance, as well as a more specialised scholarship level. Children who have studied for longer and feel more confident are stretched whilst those with less depth of learning are assessed separately. Our tutors ensure that children reach their level of potential. If there are gaps in knowledge for whatever reason, our specialists can fast track children who wish to take the higher tier papers. Tutors are also experienced in preparing children for Scholarship exams and school specific Classics awards.

Sophie has 19 years experience teaching English and Latin at leading preparatory and public schools in the south of England. She has extensive knowledge of the transfer process at 13+, having held the role of prep school Director of Studies which involved liaising with senior schools and helping children prepare for interviews as well as overseeing their preparation for Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations in all subjects as well as teaching her own. Sophie has prepared scholarship candidates for Eton; Harrow; Winchester; Marlborough; Wellington; Charterhouse; St. Mary’s, Ascot; Cheltenham Ladies’ College and many other public schools. She also has extensive experience of teaching children with learning support needs and was Head of Learning Support at a prep school for five years.

Sophie is in high demand as a tutor. Her students have enjoyed significant successes in their exams this year and this looks set to continue. Parents have been known to return to Prep School Tutor to seek Sophie’s support for their children once they have moved on to senior school, such is the rapport she is able to build with her tutees and the benefit they gain from her tuition. Sophie specialises in unknotting the difficulties that can so easily occur when Latin is taught in larger classes, and then moving forward through the syllabus at a pace that suits the individual. As an English teacher, her methods for helping children to generate ideas and structure longer pieces of writing are, she has been told, used by her students even once they have moved on to university! She also specialises in teaching reading techniques that allow exam candidates to maintain the focus they need to perform well in comprehension papers, even when under the pressure of an exam situation. Sophie has a proven track record of obtaining excellent results for pupils in both her specialist subjects. She does this by breaking down the curriculum into manageable sections, smoothing out any problem areas and reminding pupils frequently of the progress that they have made to boost their confidence.

Sophie has been extensively involved in the preparation of candidates for interviews and selection days at academically demanding public schools, including most of the London day schools; she excels at preparing even the most anxious for interview. She has undertaken considerable research into the different approaches to selection taken by different schools and the sorts of questions they ask. Sophie’s method is to equip candidates with the strategies they need to be able to think calmly under pressure so they can answer taxing questions without becoming flustered. She also works hard to ensure that candidates feel they have plenty to talk about by drawing out their interests and enthusiasms in her encouraging preparatory sessions.

Sophie’s aim as a tutor is to prepare her pupils so well that they approach examinations or interviews fearlessly and embrace both as an opportunity to demonstrate who they are and what they know. She aims to give her tutees a love of learning - and even rigorous assessment - that will last for the rest of their lives.

When not teaching, Sophie enjoys spending time, preferably outdoors, with her husband, young son and their Border Terrier, Rosie. She loves food and growing and cooking her own vegetables. A good weekend away would include a city break (she lives very rurally) with a visit to a great restaurant and a trip to the theatre.

History fascinates us on a personal level as well as a global level; there is just SO much to learn about though! Our tutors inspire a desire to learn more by making sessions fun as well as instructive and purposeful. They encourage curiosity in their students to question what went on in the past and how different events have influenced the present day. Children are helped along the way with learning tricky facts - dates, battles, pros and cons - but also, and importantly, shown how to analyse source material and to draw their own historical interpretations. Children are guided in how to read the question and answer the question asked, rather than trying to dodge the bullet with their own memorised anecdotes. The 13 plus Common Entrance syllabus for History can seem among the weightiest to manage; fear not, our tutors can clear the way to effective, confident learning.

Geography goes far beyond quiz questions like, ‘What’s the capital of Bolivia?’ 13+ Common Entrance Geography aims to stimulate a real curiosity in the world around us, introducing children to different societies, cultures and environments. However, there is rarely quite enough class time to develop every idea fully. Some children may need more than a few minutes of map work practice to grasp the essentials, whilst others may need concepts expanded and glossary terms explained in more depth or in a different style before embarking on their own fieldwork enquiries. If there is a Geography project to tackle or a presentation to make, Prep School Tutor specialist 13+ tutors can assist with the detail, advise and help refine and tweak the end product to ensure that the tutee feels confident in their knowledge as well as their delivery.
