Merchant Taylors' School

11+ applications need to be made by the end of November when your son is in Year 6 (age 10-11). 11+ exams take place in the second week in January (Year 6) and consist of English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning. these exams are set by Merchant Taylors' School. They do not use the 11+ ISEB papers. Following these 11+ exams, boys who have reached the required standard will be asked back for an interview.

Why are there so many apostrophes and what’s all this accent business? Singing and dancing in French is fun but suddenly needing to write can be a shock to the system. A great many children start French in Year 7 with no previous knowledge but still manage to shine by the time the 13 plus Common Entrance comes along. Also, for those who have studied French but perhaps not been overly engaged, this is the moment to make absolutely sure that the foundation is in place and the groundwork is complete.

GCSE: Most private schools work towards IGCSE as opposed to GCSE but, not to worry, our teachers tutor both. For IGCSE, the exam boards are either Edexcel or Cambridge OCR so worth checking with the school. In either case, the aim is, essentially, to have more fun in France! As a student learns to use language more effectively, they feel confident and more independent abroad, chatting in the boulangerie on one level, reading articles and watching a film on another. The first step is exam success, then doors open.

The course includes various cultural aspects which most children take a natural interest in, if only as a breather from grammar! The topics chosen for the reading and writing papers are designed to be suitable for the students with ‘personal life’ and ‘education’ a continuation of 13+ Common Entrance in part. Though these themes feel familiar at the outset, there is little room for complacency. To reach those top grades, students need to mature linguistically and develop a deeper understanding and complexity in their written and spoken communication. Let us help!

13+: Latin, Greek, both even? Fostering an interest in the Greeks and Romans is one thing but navigating through the 13 plus syllabus of grammar, syntax and vocabulary can be a headache without some support and guidance. There are three possible levels for Classics at Common Entrance, as well as a more specialised scholarship level. Children who have studied for longer and feel more confident are stretched whilst those with less depth of learning are assessed separately. Our tutors ensure that children reach their level of potential. If there are gaps in knowledge for whatever reason, our specialists can fast track children who wish to take the higher tier papers. Tutors are also experienced in preparing children for Scholarship exams and school specific Classics awards.

GCSE: Latin is an extremely highly-regarded GCSE and one that still catches the eyes of university admissions tutors. Whether subsequent studies lead candidates into the Arts or the Sciences, anyone who has studied Latin to the age of 16 will be able to testify how useful a knowledge of this beautiful language has been to them, whatever their experiences of learning it at school might have been! Although the exam specifications are refreshing in that they do not tend to change hugely from year to year (the advantage to studying a dead language) some of the more challenging grammar points can be difficult to master in a large class working through them at pace.

Our tutors know that, without an extremely strong and confident knowledge of the basic rules of grammar and syntax in Latin, it can be hard to comprehend, let alone master, some of the trickier concepts introduced at GCSE. For this reason, we quickly find the point at which candidates lost their confidence and, using a carefully selected library of online textbooks and interactive resources, we introduce and practise each new concept at a pace that suits the individual learner. In particular, he encourages students to draw parallels between Latin vocabulary and English and uses the study of Classical languages to enhance and complement students' use of English. To quote a recent examiners' report on the Westminster Challenge, there is a noticeable correlation between candidates' performance on the Classical papers and the overall classification.

As well as teaching Latin and Greek to CE and senior school scholarship level, Peter is au fait with all the current GCSE, A-level and Pre-U specifications for Classical subjects and teaches all language and literature options, including translation from and into Latin and Greek. Judy is a very experienced teacher who has taught in girls’, boys’ and co-educational schools, both in the UK and in Asia. This year, she moved from North London Collegiate School, Jeju (in South Korea) to the original NLCS girls’ school in London. Her favourite subject is Classics, including Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation. She has taught these to students from Year 5 to Oxbridge entrance level and worked as a Principal Examiner for Classical Civilisation at A Level. She has specialised in working with high-achieving students, but also is proud of her success with students who have had to overcome a barrier such as dyslexia, low self-esteem or a tendency towards carelessness in order to excel at Latin.

Judy’s aim in tutoring is to ensure that students have a deep understanding of the subject at the required level. She often finds that uncovering and righting a misconception or gap in knowledge can lead to significant progress. This is easier to do in a one-one situation, since students often hide their uncertainties, even from themselves. Once a student has mastered the key grammatical concepts and knowledge, Judy supports them in gaining confidence in tackling longer translations and other examination questions. She also aims to foster a deep love of the subjects she teaches. Many of her students have continued Classics to university level and some have become Classics teachers themselves.

13+: History fascinates us on a personal level as well as a global level; there is just SO much to learn about though! Our tutors inspire a desire to learn more by making sessions fun as well as instructive and purposeful. They encourage curiosity in their students to question what went on in the past and how different events have influenced the present day. Children are helped along the way with learning tricky facts - dates, battles, pros and cons - but also, and importantly, shown how to analyse source material and to draw their own historical interpretations. Children are guided in how to read the question and answer the question asked, rather than trying to dodge the bullet with their own memorised anecdotes. The 13 plus Common Entrance syllabus for History can seem among the weightiest to manage; fear not, our tutors can clear the way to effective, confident learning.

11+: Verbal reasoning (VR) for pre-tests and 11 plus is comprised of up to fifty different question types including, for example, letter and number codes, identifying word endings and beginnings, odd one out exercises, analogies and number sequences. The more practice, the better, as some papers can be long and time management is as much a concern as ability.

13+: Verbal Reasoning (VR) is not usually a requirement for 13+. However, for candidates coming from schools that do not prepare for Common Entrance, they may sit the school's own papers. One of these may well be verbal reasoning.

Jane's last five performance reviews and lesson observations have all been rated 'Excellent' with comments on her attention to detail, diligence and approachability. A senior colleague described her to visitors as an 'inspirational teacher'.

Jane has also been a form tutor over the course of her teaching career, which adds another dimension to teacher pupil relationships. She enjoys developing these relationships and finding out about her pupils aside from their academic progress. Her mixed ability classes include pupils with a wide range of educational needs, and she is accustomed to differentiating in a number of ways: by task, by outcome, assessing for learning and one to one support.

Jane currently works in Kuwait and resides in Wales during the generous international school holidays. The time difference between the UK and Kuwait is just two hours. Phil is an exceptional teacher and communicator, having taught at leading preparatory school Dulwich Prep London for the past 5 years. During his time in the school’s esteemed English Department, Phil taught across Key Stages 2 and 3. He has many years’ experience in preparing students for the 13+ Common Entrance examination and holds a 100% record of success at this level. An impressive number of students have attained A or A* grades under his guidance, many of whom have vastly exceeded expected levels. Phil has prepared students for entrance into top public schools including Eton, Westminster, Harrow, Winchester, Kings Canterbury, Marlborough, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and many others. Phil has worked with high achieving students to prepare them for scholarship awards into such top schools as Eton and Westminster. He has extensive experience in preparing students for the London Day School 13+ examinations, including for schools such as Dulwich College, Alleyn’s, Trinity and Whitgift. Additionally, Phil has taught Year 6 English, preparing students for 11+ pre-test exams. He has a keen understanding of syllabus and requirements across all of these levels.

In 2017 and 2018, Phil wrote and directed the main Summer Term theatre productions at Dulwich Prep - an immersive theatre piece and a full-scale musical, both of which were incredibly well received by parents and pupils alike.

As well as using past papers and published resources, Phil draws upon his wealth of experience and creative ingenuity to devise his own comprehension papers, model writing pieces, worksheets and multimedia presentations. He is passionate about engaging students in stimuli beyond the written word, by using the analysis of film, theatre, photography and art frequently in learning. This gives his students an impressive cultural engagement which sets them apart from their peers in understanding and engagement with the text. It also makes learning a great deal more fun and exciting!

Phil focuses on teaching students structured exam technique whilst also nurturing inspiration and passion for literature. He is passionate about tapping into every student’s full potential, understanding that a child needs to experience individual recognition and belief, in order to thrive. As a result of this approach he has seen students blossoming under his teaching; many students who have struggled with English in the past have discovered a confidence and passion for the subject under his care. Parents have commented that Phil’s teaching has been the “breakthrough” in their child’s learning they have been hoping for.

Phil brings a unique energy and excitement to teaching, aided by his extensive experience as a writer and performance poet. As well as performing across London’s top spoken word venues, his writing has been published in both written and filmic form (www.vimeo.com/shmaya). He is also a keen writer of prose, having written two novels for children and young adults. This passion for performance and the written word spills over into Phil’s teaching as he uses storytelling and poetry to inspire students, as well as guiding them in how to use creative performance skills in order to inspire confidence both in and outside the classroom. His skill as a writer and poet make him an expert in teaching creative writing and poetry analysis in particular.

Phil has a great deal of experience in preparing students for interviews and selection days at the top London Senior Schools, having in-depth knowledge of common interview questions and how pupils should present themselves. His experience as a performer enables him to coach students in the use of body language and vocal technique to help them “stand out from the crowd”.

Phil is a highly organised and motivated professional. He firmly believes that a well-ordered and focused teacher inspires the same attitude and approach in his students. To this end, he plans and prepares every lesson with clear goals and objectives in mind. He is a proponent of individualised learning, creating personal plans for students which include target setting and guidance in learning focus. This approach gives his students a sense of control and progression over their learning, as they begin to realise how far they have come.

Phil’s experience as a form tutor and Head of House gives him excellent interpersonal and pastoral skills. He has worked with students who have specific needs, including those with Downs Syndrome and those on the autistic spectrum, whilst also mentoring children with behavioural difficulties.

Angela is an expert in pre-test preparation to the highly competitive UK private schools. She has an excellent knowledge of the entrance exam requirements for British public schools, including Eton, Westminster, Wycombe Abbey and Sevenoaks. She has worked to prepare children in Maths and Science, through 13+ Common Entrance, 13+ Scholarship and also to success with GCSE particularly in the Sciences. Some students have been boosted from the bottom of their class to the top. Working on their confidence can be the key to see a major improvement in their performance. Angela tailors each lesson to a student's needs and individual learning style. She could not work harder in terms of preparation and dedication and will go to the nth degree to accommodate her students. She is a happy, caring and dynamic teacher who thrives on helping children to reach their goals.

During Angela's NQT year, she had the highly unusual honour of being appointed as a head of department in a London Prep school. During this time she highlighted issues that caused changes in science departments across over 120 schools. She also ran scholarship clubs, booster sessions and gave up her lunches and time after school to help students gain entry to the school of their choice. Parents commented to the headteacher that they had never seen anyone so dedicated to helping the children pass their entrance exams.

She then went on to teach at a prep school in Milton Keynes. Here she ran intervention lessons for children who struggled with English and maths and extension classes for children who were gifted and talented. During her time here, the independent schools inspectors rated Angela as an Excellent teacher(the highest level given to a teacher at that time)commenting that they had never seen such empathy and solicitude in action before. They decided that the care she gave to children meant the children showed greater achievement. In her free time Angela also tutored local children through the local 11+ exams. Gaining families who would want her to tutor their children for many years.

All the previous hard work led to Angela being appointed as head of Science and PSHE at Christ Church Cathedral School In Oxford. Here she taught the children of many Oxford academics, even hosting talks given by some of Christ Church's leading academics to boost the children's career options and interests. Also running a leadership skills club to boost the pupils skills for future life and Interview technique. She helped pupils to gain entry to schools such as Eton, Harrow, Magdalean college school, Radley and Westminster. These also included scholarship places.

Angela then began tutoring children for entrance exams full time. Gaining an indepth knowledge of entrance exams for many of the top schools including Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Wycombe Abbey, Sevenoaks, Charterhouse and the Perse.

She was also trained by Eton and taken on as a leadership tutor in their leadership course collaboration with EtonX.

Nina is an enthusiastic educator! She loves imparting knowledge to students and really wants to get them interested in the subjects they are learning. Nina’s areas of expertise are in Science and Mathematics where she teaches through Common Entrance and GCSE / iGCSE, through to A-Level. She is also somewhat pro at 11+ preparation. Nina has great experience and detailed knowledge of the requirements for pre-tests, 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance and Scholarship exams to the top British public schools. She has taught from Key Stage 2 through to A-level both in schools and as a private tutor.

After completing degrees in Science and Business Studies, Nina worked for many years in Investment Banking and Consulting. She then lived abroad in parts of Europe and South America, where she worked as a teacher. Her interest in teaching and learning then encouraged her to obtain teaching qualifications. Nina has experience of teaching Science, Mathematics, Literacy and English and is patient and sympathetic to the needs of her students. Having lived abroad with children herself, Nina understands the challenges faced by students in different education systems aiming towards entrance to British Schools.

Diana taught at a British Prep school in the Cayman Islands, assisting the students with their 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance exams, as well as tutoring them to improve their grades in GCSE and A level. She believes in building the student’s confidence to allow them to become more inquisitive and knowledgeable about their learning.
