INTRODUCTION TO 11+ AND PRE-TESTS

Does it sound too young for exams?!  Eleven plus may feel early to embark on major exams but children will constantly surprise us with just how much they can achieve.  Presenting the preparation as a challenge and making each stage of learning and revising as engaging, purposeful and positive as possible is an effective skill in itself.  Prep School Tutor prides itself on its approach, working with children to attain transferrable knowledge, addressing their needs through personalised tutorials and, crucially, always keeping the end goal in sight.

Across the UK, the application process for senior school varies considerable.  Be aware that, while we might expect an 11+ entry in certain schools, it is more and more common for major public schools to have 11+ pre-tests.  This means that children are assessed in Year 6 (aged 10-11) with a view to receiving a conditional offer for entry at 13+.  They will still have to pass their Common Entrance at 13+ but the 11+ pre-tests have become a prerequisite for a growing number of independent schools.

Generally, the 11+ entrance and pre-test examinations consist of a combination of two or more of the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Non-verbal Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning.  Some schools include Science as part of the requirement so it is always advisable to check the detail with the school in question or ask us and we can do this for you.

English is one of the first subjects to come under the microscope. Whether in pre-tests, 11+ or 13+ Common Entrance Exams, all children need to feel confident with their reading and writing skills and be able to transfer this knowledge across the subject spectrum. Grammatical errors stick out a mile so let's iron them out ahead of time and make sure they stick for life.

11+: Schools will vary in their requirements and it is always worth checking with them directly on the detail. As a guide, the English papers at 11 plus will be divided into three sections: a passage to read and answer questions on to assess comprehension, a grammar section to test punctuation and parts of speech, and then a composition section to show off their creative skills. Senior Schools may choose to examine with just two of these papers.

13+: For Common Entrance, our tutors break down the reading and writing elements into manageable exercises. Children develop skills at their own pace and, as confidence grows, they start to experiment effectively with all kinds of written language in their creative expression. Exercises in grammar and syntax ensure that each individual has a strong foundation for continued learning. Through reading extracts from an assortment of poetry, prose and plays, the aim is to encourage a genuine interest in a diverse range of literature and language. Our tutors place deliberate emphasis on enjoyment in each session; work is purposeful and a pleasure.

GCSE: English provides the foundation for success in all IGCSE subjects and almost all students attending independent schools will study for two qualifications: (1) English Literature and (2) English Language. Prep School Tutors have extensive experience of teaching towards both qualifications for numerous exam-board specifications. Armed with this knowledge and an understanding of their student’s learning style, Prep School Tutors are able to tailor their support sessions, helping to cover the content of the courses but also to help practise the examined skills as set out in the relevant assessment objectives.

In general terms, English Literature requires students to study a selection of prose, poetry and drama texts and demonstrate an understanding of a ‘writer’s craft’. A Prep School Tutor will ensure that their student has a robust understanding of their set texts, revising content where necessary in an interactive and engaging manner. Similarly, students will develop their ability to write sophisticated and logical commentaries on the effects of language, critically analysing the construction of meaning within their set texts with flair and individuality. Writing tasks are often performed in ‘real-time’ whereby students are provided with instant feedback from their tutor on the content and style of their writing using collaborative online tools. The skills honed through these collaborative writing exercises can then be confidently applied to exam-style, timed writing exercises and supervised coursework tasks.

Sophie has 19 years experience teaching English and Latin at leading preparatory and public schools in the south of England. She has extensive knowledge of the transfer process at 13+, having held the role of prep school Director of Studies which involved liaising with senior schools and helping children prepare for interviews as well as overseeing their preparation for Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations in all subjects as well as teaching her own. Sophie has prepared scholarship candidates for Eton; Harrow; Winchester; Marlborough; Wellington; Charterhouse; St. Mary’s, Ascot; Cheltenham Ladies’ College and many other public schools. She also has extensive experience of teaching children with learning support needs and was Head of Learning Support at a prep school for five years.

Sophie is in high demand as a tutor. Her students have enjoyed significant successes in their exams this year and this looks set to continue. Parents have been known to return to Prep School Tutor to seek Sophie’s support for their children once they have moved on to senior school, such is the rapport she is able to build with her tutees and the benefit they gain from her tuition. Sophie specialises in unknotting the difficulties that can so easily occur when Latin is taught in larger classes, and then moving forward through the syllabus at a pace that suits the individual. As an English teacher, her methods for helping children to generate ideas and structure longer pieces of writing are, she has been told, used by her students even once they have moved on to university! She also specialises in teaching reading techniques that allow exam candidates to maintain the focus they need to perform well in comprehension papers, even when under the pressure of an exam situation. Sophie has a proven track record of obtaining excellent results for pupils in both her specialist subjects. She does this by breaking down the curriculum into manageable sections, smoothing out any problem areas and reminding pupils frequently of the progress that they have made to boost their confidence.

Sophie has been extensively involved in the preparation of candidates for interviews and selection days at academically demanding public schools, including most of the London day schools; she excels at preparing even the most anxious for interview. She has undertaken considerable research into the different approaches to selection taken by different schools and the sorts of questions they ask. Sophie’s method is to equip candidates with the strategies they need to be able to think calmly under pressure so they can answer taxing questions without becoming flustered. She also works hard to ensure that candidates feel they have plenty to talk about by drawing out their interests and enthusiasms in her encouraging preparatory sessions.

Sophie’s aim as a tutor is to prepare her pupils so well that they approach examinations or interviews fearlessly and embrace both as an opportunity to demonstrate who they are and what they know. She aims to give her tutees a love of learning - and even rigorous assessment - that will last for the rest of their lives.

When not teaching, Sophie enjoys spending time, preferably outdoors, with her husband, young son and their Border Terrier, Rosie. She loves food and growing and cooking her own vegetables. A good weekend away would include a city break (she lives very rurally) with a visit to a great restaurant and a trip to the theatre.

Jane is a highly experienced teacher and an excellent communicator. She has worked at management level as well as in the classroom both in the UK, including St Paul’s Girls, and in British international schools. Her experience covers Reception all the way through to Year 13 but she specialises in the 11+ Common Entrance exams (100% success) and, more recently, the GL online assessments. She has 20 years experience preparing for examinations for entry to UK prep and secondary schools, as well as schools in the US and the highly competitive international independent schools in the Middle East. She is an expert in eLearning and online tuition having developed her school's eLearning strategy over the past few years.

A recent ISI inspection report mentioned her impact across the school and was particularly impressed by the confidence and independence of the children in terms of finding their own solutions to tasks and by the level of higher-order thinking that they employed. Jane sees the development of these skills as key to exam and general study success.

As well as using past papers and published resources, Jane devises a range of resources to engage pupils and she tailors them to each pupil's needs. She thinks it is important to set tasks into context in order to add another layer of meaning to the work. Jane is adept at breaking down tasks, questions and topics into their component parts and helping pupils to understand their structure. In fact, much work is done in analysing question types and finding both the similarities and differences between papers, believing that, if a child can identify a question type they will more quickly reach an answer.

Jane's last five performance reviews and lesson observations have all been rated 'Excellent' with comments on her attention to detail, diligence and approachability. A senior colleague described her to visitors as an 'inspirational teacher'.

Jane has also been a form tutor over the course of her teaching career, which adds another dimension to teacher pupil relationships. She enjoys developing these relationships and finding out about her pupils aside from their academic progress. Her mixed ability classes include pupils with a wide range of educational needs, and she is accustomed to differentiating in a number of ways: by task, by outcome, assessing for learning and one to one support.

Jane currently works in Kuwait and resides in Wales during the generous international school holidays. The time difference between the UK and Kuwait is just two hours. Her passions are travel, world food, collecting perfume, writing, reading fiction and political biographies, following international politics and movies.

During his time in the school’s esteemed English Department, Phil taught across Key Stages 2 and 3. He has many years’ experience in preparing students for the 13+ Common Entrance examination and holds a 100% record of success at this level. An impressive number of students have attained A or A* grades under his guidance, many of whom have vastly exceeded expected levels. Phil has prepared students for entrance into top public schools including Eton, Westminster, Harrow, Winchester, Kings Canterbury, Marlborough, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and many others. Phil has worked with high achieving students to prepare them for scholarship awards into such top schools as Eton and Westminster. He has extensive experience in preparing students for the London Day School 13+ examinations, including for schools such as Dulwich College, Alleyn’s, Trinity and Whitgift. Additionally, Phil has taught Year 6 English, preparing students for 11+ pre-test exams. He has a keen understanding of syllabus and requirements across all of these levels.

In 2017 and 2018, Phil wrote and directed the main Summer Term theatre productions at Dulwich Prep - an immersive theatre piece and a full-scale musical, both of which were incredibly well received by parents and pupils alike.

As well as using past papers and published resources, Phil draws upon his wealth of experience and creative ingenuity to devise his own comprehension papers, model writing pieces, worksheets and multimedia presentations. He is passionate about engaging students in stimuli beyond the written word, by using the analysis of film, theatre, photography and art frequently in learning. This gives his students an impressive cultural engagement which sets them apart from their peers in understanding and engagement with the text. It also makes learning a great deal more fun and exciting!

Phil focuses on teaching students structured exam technique whilst also nurturing inspiration and passion for literature. He is passionate about tapping into every student’s full potential, understanding that a child needs to experience individual recognition and belief, in order to thrive. As a result of this approach he has seen students blossoming under his teaching; many students who have struggled with English in the past have discovered a confidence and passion for the subject under his care. Parents have commented that Phil’s teaching has been the “breakthrough” in their child’s learning they have been hoping for.

Phil brings a unique energy and excitement to teaching, aided by his extensive experience as a writer and performance poet. As well as performing across London’s top spoken word venues, his writing has been published in both written and filmic form (www.vimeo.com/shmaya). He is also a keen writer of prose, having written two novels for children and young adults. This passion for performance and the written word spills over into Phil’s teaching as he uses storytelling and poetry to inspire students, as well as guiding them in how to use creative performance skills in order to inspire confidence both in and outside the classroom. His skill as a writer and poet make him an expert in teaching creative writing and poetry analysis in particular.

Phil has a great deal of experience in preparing students for interviews and selection days at the top London Senior Schools, having in-depth knowledge of common interview questions and how pupils should present themselves. His experience as a performer enables him to coach students in the use of body language and vocal technique to help them “stand out from the crowd”.

Phil is a highly organised and motivated professional. He firmly believes that a well-ordered and focused teacher inspires the same attitude and approach in his students. To this end, he plans and prepares every lesson with clear goals and objectives in mind. He is a proponent of individualised learning, creating personal plans for students which include target setting and guidance in learning focus. This approach gives his students a sense of control and progression over their learning, as they begin to realise how far they have come.

Phil’s experience as a form tutor and Head of House gives him excellent interpersonal and pastoral skills. He has worked with students who have specific needs, including those with Downs Syndrome and those on the autistic spectrum, whilst also mentoring children with behavioural difficulties.

These varying facets of Phil’s practice and character set him apart as an engaging and effective teacher who inspires and motivates with great success in a tutoring situation. Tutees under his care gain confidence, skill and a keen sense of excellence. They have fun and discover a new passion for literature and learning due to his infectious energy and unique approach.

Phil has recently moved to Northern Ireland with his wife and two young daughters. In his spare time he enjoys running, eating out and drinking great coffee!

Maths is an essential life skill. Senior Schools look at Maths results as a key indicator of a student's potential academically. Let's grasp the nettle and get those number skills warmed up ready to take on any assessment in our path!

11+: Maths papers will generally home in on ‘the big four’ (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), and include questions on fractions, percentages, shape, area, graphs, money, measurement and time. The purpose of the examination is to identify those with mathematical potential, who can think logically; maths puzzles and logic problems are useful but Prep School Tutor specialists can provide more focused, effective methods of preparation for 11 plus.

13+: Maths can give some children the fear but, step-by-step, our tutors make the most problematic of problems manageable. Once confident that the foundation concepts are in place, tutors guide their students on to through the more challenging Common Entrance topics. This encourages them to self-assess and to become increasingly adept at applying their mathematical knowledge when both interpreting and solving word problems, which is the dominating question style for Common Entrance Mathematics. We encourage students to reason and form logical conclusions about unfamiliar mathematical concepts as they make the leap up from 11+ to success at Common Entrance and beyond.

GCSE: Mathematics is the building block of our society; without maths we’d have no architecture, engineering, medicine, science or technology. Our lives would be considerably poorer. Is it any wonder then that virtually all students in the UK study mathematics to at least GCSE?

In fact, a good pass in GCSE/IGCSE mathematics is often a requirement for further study, allowing access to Sixth form and University. For those students wishing to take a maths related subject at a more advanced level, GCSE mathematics is crucial and our tutors will help to address any difficulties now before they impact on later studies.

Greater emphasis than ever before is now placed on problem solving, interpreting results in a real life context and formal mathematical proof in the GCSE can be daunting for some. Our tutors know the best ways to encourage students to set out their reasoning logically and communicate their answers clearly thus gaining those crucial extra marks so often lost in exams. Building confidence is key to success and our aim is that students will be motivated to take on the challenges set before them and be fully prepared for the new style GCSE exams.

A final point worth noting is that, while many Independent Schools follow the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A syllabus, it is always worth checking with the school as the Edexcel GCSE exam contains an additional non-calculator paper.

Science is a really popular subject with most children at the outset. They know something about mini beasts and love the magic of a puff of smoke or electric current to liven up the school day. Beyond the basics, some elements can be pretty complex and need unravelling. Prep School Tutor has some really excellent Science teachers. Do have a browse or ask for recommendations.

11+: Schools that include a Science paper as part of the 11+ Common Entrance will likely use the ISEB Common Entrance papers. These assess energy, movement and forces as well as material behaviour, life and living things and the environment, Earth and the solar system. There is a growing trend for Science to be an integral part of an assessment day. A number of schools invite the children to attend a Science lesson during their visit. As well as the academic side, those observing are looking for classroom skills, such as listening, being involved in group work and social interaction with peers.

13+: Scientific ideas and explanations can be interesting, enthralling even but, when it comes down to the detail, is it all slightly baffling as well? Prep School Tutors encourage every child to be confident in their understanding of Science and to recognise connections across the disciplines of Chemistry, Physics and Biology. The tutors instil an enjoyment of the subject through their own passion, motivating their tutees to discuss and explain phenomena, think beyond the detail given and so draw their own conclusions. Ultimately, with guidance, each child can learn to apply their experimental and investigative skills with confidence and find for themselves their own eureka moment!

GCSE: The Science Curriculum at GCSE offers a wide variety of syllabuses, ranging from Combined Science at GCSE, Single and Double Award International GCSE, through to the three Separate Sciences at both GCSE and International GCSE (IGCSE).

Private schools use both GCSE and IGCSE qualifications, and understanding what is needed for each exam can be daunting. The range of skills and knowledge needed for Physics, Chemistry and Biology also vary greatly. Not only are there the facts and formulae to be learned, but pupils also need to interpret data, analyse information, use mathematical skills to solve problems, comment upon practicals and experiments, explain results, describe processes, suggest solutions, write accurate answers - all the while demonstrating their scientific knowledge and using the correct scientific language. Phew! If all this seems too much, then don’t worry, experienced tutors can help pupils to cut through the confusion and concentrate upon what is needed.

By breaking down subject areas into manageable sections, tutors can guide pupils through the subject knowledge and can explain how to spot what each question is actually asking. Then, pupils can learn how to give their answers in a way that will score the most marks. Importantly, tutoring can help pupils to not lose marks, whether through inexperience, careless mistakes or lack of exam technique.

Tutors are very aware though, that too much emphasis on exams and grades can destroy pupils’ interest and motivation in Science. The best learning happens when imagination is sparked and pupils ask “how” and “why”. Science tutoring can be inspirational as well as informational and all tutors try to make lessons not only educational, but also enjoyable. With the right approach, tutoring for Science GCSE can help remove exam pressure and achieve great results.

There is a growing trend to include verbal reasoning as a part of almost every assessment. Schools use the results as a guide to potential, so it is worth having a handle on what to expect on the day. Don't believe anyone who says that it is not possible to prepare!

11+: Verbal reasoning (VR) for pre-tests and 11 plus is comprised of up to fifty different question types including, for example, letter and number codes, identifying word endings and beginnings, odd one out exercises, analogies and number sequences.

Phil is an exceptional teacher and communicator, having taught at leading preparatory school Dulwich Prep London for the past 5 years.

Non-verbal reasoning looks easy at the start; the examples given before the assessment begins are usually straight forward enough. Scratch beneath the surface, though, and these assessments can prove to be pretty tough as the questions quickly increase in complexity. Schools look at the scores gained as an indicator of a student's academic potential, so it is worth practising before the assessment day for a student to feel fully prepared and confident. Don't believe anyone who says it is not possible to prepare!

11+: Non-verbal reasoning (NVR) - both for pre-tests and 11 plus - is a more visual assessment with questions based around shapes, patterns, symmetry and sequences. Some children find these light relief after the challenges of more wordy English and maths papers. However, others find these papers less clear. Either way, practice with the types of questions remains key to success. Prep School Tutor can provide practice materials and help children to identify the different types of questions used, and understand where patterns lie. Achieving familiarity with these types of questions can quickly build a child's confidence and help them to avoid panicking when they see some question types not covered as part of the normal school curriculum.

13+: As for verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning (NVR) is not used for 13+ Common Entrance, but can be a component for candidates sitting a school's own equivalent papers for 13+ entry. Tasks are on visual assessment with questions based around shapes, patterns, symmetry and sequences. Some children breeze through, but others find these papers less than clear. Practice can make all the difference and give candidates confidence in what can be a highly stressful situation.

Jane has also been a form tutor over the course of her teaching career, which adds another dimension to teacher pupil relationships. She enjoys developing these relationships and finding out about her pupils aside from their academic progress.
